![]() The diamond engagement ring, love's most enduring symbol, was born more than five centuries ago and has grown stronger with each passing year. According to a recent De Beers' survey, 82% of all brides receive a diamond engagement ring, bringing to a full circle the legacy begun by lovers in 1477. That was the year in which Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, with a simple gold band set with a diamond. He chose a diamond for its pure, fiery beauty and placed it on the third finger of her left hand. This finger, according to the Ancient Egyptians, contained the vein of love that coursed directly to the heart. Therefore, a ring on this finger would ensure a long and loving marriage.
